Spinal Cord Anatomy - Fissure and Sulci

▬ Spinal Cord Anatomy ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ The spinal cord is a vital structure that connects the brain to the rest of the body, controlling movement and sensation. It is protected by the vertebral column and comprises various regions, fibers, tracts, and membranes that work together to ensure proper neural function. Understanding the anatomy of the spinal cord is essential for healthcare professionals and students alike, as it provides a foundation for diagnosing and treating injuries and diseases of the nervous system. ▬ Vertebral Column ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ The vertebral column, also known as the spine or backbone, is a vital structure made up of approximately 33 individual bones called vertebrae. These vertebrae are separated by intervertebral discs, which provide cushioning and facilitate movement. The vertebral column is divided into five distinct regions, each characterized by different vertebral structures: cervical (7 vertebrae), thoracic (12 vertebrae), lumbar (5 vertebrae), sacrum (5 fused vertebrae), and coccyx (4 fused vertebrae) ▬ Meninges ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ The meninges are three protective membranes that surround the spinal cord and brain. These layers, from outermost to innermost, are the dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater. They serve to protect the delicate neural tissue of the central nervous system and contain cerebrospinal fluid, which provides support and additional protection. 👉 Spinal Cord Enlargements Two enlargements in the spinal cord accommodate the increased number of nerve cells needed to control the limbs: the cervical enlargement, which serves the nerves of the upper limbs, and the lumbar enlargement, which serves the nerves of the lower limbs. ▬ Spinal Tracts ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Spinal tracts can be categorized as motor (descending efferent pathways) or sensory (ascending afferent pathways). Motor pathways include the pyramidal tracts, which control voluntary movement, and the extrapyramidal tracts, which regulate involuntary movement and muscle tone. Sensory pathways include the dorsal column-medial lemniscus system, which transmits information related to touch, vibration, and proprioception; the spinocerebellar tracts, which convey information from the muscles and joints to the cerebellum for coordination; and the anterolateral system, which is responsible for transmitting pain and temperature sensations. ▬ Spinal Nerves ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Spinal nerves are pairs of mixed nerves (containing both sensory and motor fibers) that emerge from the spinal cord at each vertebral level. There are 31 pairs in total: 8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral, and 1 coccygeal. Each spinal nerve is formed by the union of a dorsal root, which contains sensory fibers, and a ventral root, which contains motor fibers. 👉 Spinal Fibers Spinal fibers refer to the nerve fibers found in the spinal cord. They can be classified as either sensory fibers, which transmit sensory information from the body to the central nervous system, or motor fibers, which transmit motor commands from the central nervous system to the muscles and glands. Sensory fibers enter the spinal cord through the dorsal roots, while motor fibers exit through the ventral roots. ▬ Fissure and Sulci ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ The fissure and sulci are grooves found on the surface of the spinal cord. The anterior median fissure is a deep groove that runs along the front (ventral) surface of the spinal cord, while the posterior median sulcus is a shallower groove that runs along the back (dorsal) surface. These grooves help to separate the spinal cord into left and right halves and serve as landmarks for identifying different regions of the spinal cord. 👉 Gray Matter Gray matter is the darker, butterfly-shaped central region of the spinal cord, which is primarily composed of neuronal cell bodies, dendrites, and unmyelinated axons. It is organized into regions known as horns: the anterior (ventral) horns contain motor neurons that control skeletal muscles, the posterior (dorsal) horns contain interneurons that receive and process sensory information, and the lateral horns, found only in the thoracic and upper lumbar regions, contain neurons that control the autonomic nervous system. 👉 White Matter White matter is the lighter-colored tissue surrounding the gray matter in the spinal cord. It is composed mainly of myelinated axons, which are responsible for transmitting signals between the spinal cord and the brain or between different levels of the spinal cord. White matter is organized into columns or funicular (anterior, lateral, and posterior) which contain ascending sensory tracts and descending motor tracts.
