track : 1-No excuse 2-Overcome 3-Control 4-Nameless 5-Mother`s dying CONTEMPT Band. Rochester, NY, USA. 1993-1997. Rochester, NY straight edge band Contempt started around 1993, and was, as many bands from that area in the early mid 1990s heavy influenced by the music and the ideology of the Syracuse vegan straight edge scene; although not all members of the band were actually vegan. One does not need much imagination to sense what Contempts two early demos, 1994's 'No Excuse' and 1995's 'Blood Of The Innocent', were about. And for those still in the dark, the cover of the second demo, that showed a monkey that fell victim to vivisection, should do the job. One of the tracks of the second demo, 'Any Means', was featured on the 'Warriors Rising' 7” compilation on Alone Records, a benefit for the Animal Defense League. The music of Contempt was a blend of heavy hardcore and metal, with singer Brad Dingman's really pissed off vocals giving the band something extra. Together with guitarist William Mack and bassist Brendan Porray, Brad formed the core of the band, that went through a number of second guitarists and drummers through the years. In 1995, Contempt, by that time a four piece, released 'A Call For Revolution', a three song 7”, on new local straight edge label Surface Records, that was in fact Brendan's label. The quote of Ronnie Lee, founder of the Animal Liberation Front, on the back, 'Total pacifism is immoral philosophy', made again clear what the band was about. The only full length of Contempt, 'One Justice', was released on German label March Through Records. The front cover was a painting by German painter Otto Rix, that showed a battlground full with dead bodies. The fact that the singer was wearing a prolife t-shirt on the back of the album, caused some controversy. When Catalyst Records re-released the CD later that year, they replaced the front cover by a picture, showing a screaming black boy (or woman) being molested by a policeman. After Contempt broke up, Brendan continued to do Surface Records, and later played in Borrowed Time. Discography No Excuse (MC) No Excuse; Overcome; Control; Nameless; Mother's Dying.
