Included in the video is the second half of the 1962 Class AA State Championship. The final score was 64-62 Sandia, as Jim Pappan hit a game winner from the top of the key to cap off the first state basketball title in Sandia High School's history. The game was played on March 10th, 1962, in front of a sold out, newly built, Johnson Gym (7,200 people, at the time). The game was the first televised state championship in New Mexico. St. Mike's was called, by the press, as the "Mighty Midgets," because they did not have a starter over 6 foot. Some famous players include Louis "Flip" Baudoin and Gary Suiter. Suiter went on to play for the first expansion NBA team, the Cleveland Cavaliers. Suiter was the most sought out basketball players to graduate from a New Mexico high school. Bob King, legendary UNM basketball architect, in 1963, noted that Suiter was one of the best freshman prospects he had ever seen. However, things did not work out at UNM, and Suiter transferred elsewhere. Baudoin went on to play for legendary coach Don Haskins at Texas Western (now UTEP) and won an NCAA championship in 1967. The 1967 Texas Western team was the first team to have an all black starting lineup, as the beat Kentucky. This team was the inspiration for the movie, "Glory Road," and was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame. The Matadors consisted of, Head Coach Don Torgerson Asst. Coach Lanny Winters Asst. Coach Joe Caligure Managers Frank Tomaszewski, Terry Price, Robert Kielich Tom Earlywine Bob Peterson Mike Bowen Ron Ford Bob Clarkson Wayne Holder Jim Pappan Louis Boudoin (Tall white starter for Matadors, he shoots lefty. Suiter shoots righty) Jim Fawyer Gary Suiter (tall white starter for Matadors) Bill McKay Joe Duffy St. Mike's consisted of (starters only) Head Coach Dick Shelley Lujan Gonzales Gutierrez Fernandez Montoya Sanchez The leading scorers for Sandia was Suiter and Baudoin, scoring 24 and 22 points, respectively. Suiter also nabbed 34 rebounds for the Matadors, a state record which still stands today. Fernandez and Montoya led St. Mike's, scoring 22 each. Don Torgerson (Sandia Coach) said this about St. Mike's, "They're a good bunch. My boys just wanted to make it. St. Michael's is really a fabulous team. They're the best little team I've ever seen. We got a break." Torgerson passed away at the age of 69 in 1998. Suiter (Sandia) said, "There wasn't really any pressure. Yeah they bothered us. They almost beat us." Pappan (Sandia) said, "As I shot the ball, it looked good." Dick Shelley (St. Mike's Coach) said, "Sandia got a couple of breaks. My boys played a tremendous ball game and tournament. They did it again." Gutierrez (St. Mike's) commented at the end of the game, "I think we could have beaten them if we started to press earlier, those are the breaks." However, St. Mike's had been pressing the whole game. Gonzales (St. Mike's)said, "Height wasn't that much of an edge. We played tall teams all year long. WE didn't start to click until the latter part of the third quarter." If you know any more information, please contact me at nolan.murphy123@gmail.com.
