There is a long history of reproductive health inequalities that have influenced women, and in particular women of colour's experiences with contraception and their reproductive health. These include how some SRH practices have developed from unethical medical research and was often practiced on previously colonised populations. Therefore, this month we want to shine a light on the facts about the many contraception options available to you. Long-acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) methods are one of these options, and can give women peace of mind with their reproductive health. However, local data shows that there is a lower uptake of these options, as well as a lack of general awareness of all the choices of contraception available to women. Key findings from a focus group of diverse women in Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham showed that many were anxious about unplanned pregnancies and wanted to be confident about their contraception choices. Some have difficulty accessing contraception when they need it, and combined with low knowledge and stigma, women are less likely to access long-acting contraception. Some women also felt that professionals are sometimes judgemental and do not take the time to give all the facts. Due to the impact of Covid, there is a high number of women requesting LARC because of gaps in provision at GP and sexual reproductive health clinics.
