For more than a thousand years, the text of the Latin Mass has held mass appeal for composers seeking to create music that is deeply spiritual and profoundly artistic. Its enduring attraction lies in the universality of its words and the breadth of musical expression they invite. From the humble beginnings of monophonic chant to the grandeur of Romantic and modern concert settings, the Mass has provided a canvas upon which successive generations of composers have explored faith, ritual, and the human condition. Listen carefully to the first four chords of Schubert’s Sanctus, and you will recognise that we have arrived in the Romantic period. The harmonic progression is abrupt and unexpected, moving far from the home key. By this time, the Mass had become a vehicle for highly personal expression and symphonic drama, transcending its liturgical origins. In the Sanctus, the choir is called upon to explore a wide dynamic and expressive range, from whispering softness to commanding power. - Program Notes by Brett Gordon, Acting Director of Music. Organ - Eduarda van Klinken This concert was presented by ChoirWorks on 20 September 2025 at St Andrew's Uniting Church, Brisbane.
