Presented by Arts + Design, in collaboration with UC Berkeley Haas School of Business, Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation Free and open to the public Featuring Tom Kelley, IDEO; Rich Lyons, UC Berkeley Haas School of Business Tom Kelley is a Partner at IDEO, and Chairman of the Tokyo-based venture capital firm D4V (Design for Ventures). He is also the author of three successful books including The Art of Innovation and the New York Times bestseller Creative Confidence, which he wrote with his brother, IDEO founder David Kelley. As a leading speaker, Tom has addressed business audiences in more than thirty countries on how to use creativity and human-centered design to renew their culture and transform their performance. Meanwhile, Tom has helped manage IDEO as it has grown from fifteen designers to a staff of more than 700 today. During that time, he has led diverse areas such as business development, marketing, and human resources. Outside of IDEO, he was named the first-ever Executive Fellow at Berkeley Haas back in 2007, and now has a similar role at the University of Tokyo. Rich Lyons was the dean of the Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley, from 2008 until 2018. Prior to becoming dean, he served as the chief learning officer at Goldman Sachs in New York, a position he held since 2006. As chief learning officer, Rich was responsible for leadership development among the firm’s managing directors. Prior to Goldman Sachs, Rich served as acting dean of the Haas School from 2004 to 2005 and as executive associate dean and Sylvan Coleman Professor of Finance from 2005 to 2006. He received his BS with highest honors from UC Berkeley (finance) and his Ph.D. from MIT (economics). Before coming to Haas, Professor Lyons spent six years on the faculty at Columbia Business School.
