LA PLATA IS THE CAPITAL CITY OF THE PROVINCE OF ARGENTINA

La Plata is the Capital city of the Province of Buenos Aires in Argentina. La Plata was envisioned as the province capital before it was built, which is reflected by its layout and design. This rationalist-designed urban metropolis has a park or square every six blocks which function as the green lungs for the city. The city is known as the 'city of diagonals' due to the street layout, which runs along two main diagonal avenues. The streets and squares are lined with Linden trees (tilia) giving La Plata its other nickname - 'la ciudad de los tilos. The designs of the government buildings were chosen in an international architectural design competition, resulting in some magnificent public buildings. La Plata is relatively small and easy to navigate as the streets are logically numbered. La Plata was designed around a central axis marked by 51st and 53rd Avenues, the main artery of the city where the main buildings and landmarks are located: the Cathedral, City Hall, Moreno Plaza, the Teatro Argentino, the Provincial Legislature and Government around Plaza San Martin. Its urban design was worked on by Pedro Benoit and his prestigious team, who are among the most distinguished in the world. His basic design was a perfect square, cut in half diagonally and with plazas and parks scattered around the city, grand tree-lined boulevards, and a forest right near the center of the city. "With the sun down and the colors of the sky fading, my friend took me to the “Faculty of the Arts” of the Universidad de La Plata. Its grim air does not let you forget that in the 1970s it was built as a detention center for the “disappeared” prisoners of the military dictatorship. There is a strong, left-wing sentiment at “la facultad,” and the students learn in the buildings where people with similar ideologies and values were once detained. In the courtyard between the buildings lies a broken car, covered with planks of wood and encroached upon by grass. “Of course,” says my friend, “that’s the family who lives here in the Facultad”.
