You visit your loft during the day. Feed birds. Check them. Everything looks fine. But what happens at NIGHT when you're sleeping? I visited my loft at 2AM every night for 30 days. Here's what I discovered: PROBLEM #1 - RESPIRATORY SOUNDS YOU CAN'T HEAR DURING DAY: During day: Loft is NOISY Birds flying, cooing, moving Outside traffic, wind, neighbors YOU can't hear subtle breathing sounds At 2AM: Loft is SILENT All birds sleeping Zero ambient noise You can hear EVERY breath What I found: 3 birds with faint wheezing (early respiratory infection) 1 bird with clicking sound when breathing (advanced canker) 2 birds breathing faster than normal (stress/illness) ALL of these birds looked 100% healthy during daytime checks. The night silence revealed problems invisible during day. PROBLEM #2 - ROOSTING POSITIONS REVEAL HEALTH: Healthy bird at night: ✅ Sleeps on high perch ✅ One leg tucked (relaxed posture) ✅ Head turned back into wing ✅ Feathers sleek against body ✅ Breathing slow and quiet Sick bird at night: ❌ Sleeps LOW or on floor (weakness) ❌ Both feet down (can't balance on one leg) ❌ Head forward/drooping (too tired to tuck) ❌ Feathers fluffed (trying to stay warm - fever?) ❌ Breathing visible/labored I found 2 birds sleeping on floor that perched normally during day. Why? During day, adrenaline + activity mask weakness. At night, true condition shows. PROBLEM #3 - PECKING ORDER REVEALS AT NIGHT: During day: Can't see who's dominant At night: Roosting positions SHOW hierarchy Dominant birds: Occupy BEST perches (highest, most protected) Sleep undisturbed Weak/bullied birds: Forced to WORST spots (low, exposed, near door) Constantly displaced by others I discovered 1 bird being severely bullied (only visible at night). During day, this bird avoided dominants. At night, forced into corner, couldn't escape. Removed this bird → health improved immediately. PROBLEM #4 - PREDATOR/PEST ACTIVITY: At 2AM I found: 🐀 Rats entering loft (through small gap I didn't know existed) Eating feed Stressing birds (birds awake, alert, frightened) 🦇 Bats roosting (in upper corners during night) Droppings contaminating loft Disease vector 🦎 Snakes (once, entering through vent) Hunting young birds NONE of these were visible during daytime visits. Pests are nocturnal. They come at night. You must check at night to find them. PROBLEM #5 - AMMONIA LEVELS PEAK AT NIGHT: Droppings accumulate all evening. Ammonia builds up overnight. 2AM ammonia test (smell at floor level): If you smell ANYTHING → ammonia dangerously high I discovered ammonia was 3X higher at night than during day (day = fresh air from activity, night = stagnant toxic buildup). Fixed ventilation → birds' respiratory health improved. PROBLEM #6 - TEMPERATURE DROPS AT NIGHT: Daytime: 20°C (68°F) - comfortable Night: 8°C (46°F) - COLD Some birds were SHIVERING at night (feathers fluffed, huddled together). Adjusted loft insulation → eliminated cold stress.
