Hi! Today I’m restoring a mysterious pocket knife that was trapped inside an old, weathered buffalo horn. You know, I’ve always loved strange and unusual objects—things that carry stories hidden inside them. A friend of mine often brings me items he finds underground, but this time, I bought this one at a flea market because something about the shape caught my eye. At first, I didn’t even realize there was a knife inside. The horn was so worn, cracked, and filled with dirt that it looked like an ordinary, useless piece of animal horn. It even smelled like old leather and dry soil. I honestly thought I had wasted my money. But once I started examining the object more closely, I noticed a thin metallic line buried inside the horn. After removing a bit of the outer layer, I realized it wasn’t just a horn—it was a pocket knife completely embedded in it, as if the horn had grown around the blade over decades. Here’s what I did: First, I carefully removed the surface dirt and the dried organic layers. Bit by bit, the steel began to reveal itself. Then I cut away the excess horn around the knife, trying not to damage the blade. The knife was heavily rusted, so I disassembled it, cleaned every part, and restored the metal using stones and sandpaper of different grits. The blade wasn’t hardened anymore—probably because of moisture trapped inside the horn for years—so I had to heat-treat it again.
