#History #China #1920s This is a stunning 2K digital restoration of the rare educational film "People Who Live in a Crowded Valley." Produced by the DeVry Corporation as part of their "World Geography" series, this silent film offers a rare ethnographic window into life along the great river plains of China nearly a century ago. The film was part of a larger curriculum-based series designed for "Human Geography", focused on the relationship between environments and human activity. It serves as a visual case study of the Yangtze or Yellow River regions. The film highlights: The Delta & The Plain: It focuses on the intense population density of the Chinese river plains. Isolationism: It explores the theory (popular in 1920s academia) that China's geographic barriers led to a distinct, "isolated" cultural development. Subsistence & Labor: Includes hand-tilled agriculture, water buffalo, and the "sampan" lifestyle (families living on small boats in the crowded waterways). Founded by Herman A. DeVry, the company was a pioneer in the "visual education" movement. While they are famous today for DeVry University, in the 1920s they were the leading manufacturer of portable "suitcase" projectors and high-quality educational films intended to replace traditional textbooks with "motion pictures for the classroom.
