Is Alcohol bad or good for you? The answer is Yes … No… Maybe! The debate about alcohol’s impact on health is heating up and you can find many opinions on this topic everywhere you look. Also here on YouTube. Social Media Doctors, Real Doctors, Sober Living Influencers, and Wine Industry representatives are sharing their insights and trying to sway your opinion also by publishing false information. This will be a controversial video, and I understand that people from both sides of the argument will not like what I have to say here but I did not make this video to please drinkers or abstainers. Instead, I want to tell you the truth about alcohol. We know for sure that excessive alcohol consumption is harmful and that it is better to drink nothing than to drink one bottle of vodka per day. We also know that humans prefer black-or-white answers as they make our decisions easier, and I can see that alcohol is often put in a box. However, the discussion about alcohol is very complex and there is not a clear answer when it comes to the question of whether alcohol is good for you or not. One symbol that visualizes this complicated relationship is: The J-Curve Humans have consumed alcohol for thousands of years – in the case of wine for more than 8000 years. So, we have a good understanding of alcohol's effects on us from making us more cooperative and allowing us to let loose to killing us. The effect of alcohol on our longevity and general health has been documented in many studies over the decades and the overall results show a pattern: The J-shaped curve. When you collect the consumption and health data of a large cohort of people and plot the alcohol consumption – usually measured in Standard drinks consumed per day – on one axis against the relative risk of premature mortality, it is 100 % clear that heavy consumption of alcohol will lead to (on average) premature death.
