This murder ballad is also known as "The Maid and the Palmer". For many years it was not often sung, because of its dark lyrics dealing with murder and incest. It was apparently preserved by Tom Munnelly who heard it sung by a member of the travelling community named John Reilly in 1963. This ballad is based on the Biblical stories of the Samaritan woman at the well, and Mary Magdalene. In European versions, the palmer is actually Jesus. There is some similarity between this ballad and The Cruel Mother (Child # 20). Some commentators believe it is related to the American song, "Jesus Met the Woman at the Well". It has been recorded by Planxty (1973) and Christy Moore (1994), among others. This song was requested by sclearyodonnell. Lyrics and chords: .... Dm A gentleman was passing by ............. F............................... C And he asked for a drink as he was dry .......... Dm At the well below the valley-o ............................ C.. Dm Green grows the lily-o .. C........ Dm ........ C ..... Dm Right among the bushes-o. My cup is full up to the brim And if I were to stoop I might fall in. If your true love was passing by You'd give him a drink if he was dry. She swore by grass, she swore by corn Her true love had never been born. He said to her you're swearing wrong Six fine children you have born. If you be a man of noble fame You'll tell to me the father of them. There's one of them by your brother John Another one by your Uncle Don. Another two by your father dear At the well below the valley-o. If you be a man of noble fame You'll tell to me what did happen to them. There's one of them buried beneath the tree Another two buried beneath the stone. Two of them outside the graveyard wall At the well below the valley-o. If you be a man of noble fame You'll tell to me what will happen myself. You'll be seven long years a-ringing a bell And seven years a-burning in hell. I'll be seven long years a-ringing a bell But the Lord above may save my soul From burning in hell.
