An afternoon ride in the Greenbrier area of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, 6 miles east of Gatlinburg, TN. The road that ascends 1500' begins paved but after a couple of miles turns into a gravel jeep trail for the next 3 or so miles where it becomes a foot trail for 4 miles to Ramsey Cascades. The 11 mile round trip took us 3 hours which included numerous stops to take in the scenery (and yes, rest!). The downhill 5.5 mile return will only require a few hundred yards of pedaling, but constant brake application. Not for the novice, views of the Middle Prong of the Little Pigeon River allow enjoyment from beginning to end. A 10 degree temperature change along the route should be anticipated. This ride was repeated 2014-10-09 just as the leaves were beginning to turn.
