Vowels are made by voiced air passing through different mouth shapes, the differences in the shape of the mouth are caused by different positions of the tongue and of the lips. -How can we distinguish between the long /i:/ and the short /ɪ/ ? /i:/ is longer than /ɪ/ as well as different in the quality of the sound. /ɪ/ is nearer in quality to /e/ and that is always shorter than /i:/ . When the vowels are followed by a strong consonant they are .... (shorter) than when followed by a weak consonant. What is the tongue position for the vowel /ɑː/ ? It will be at a low position. What are the differences between /ɑː/ and /ɒ/ ? The short vowel /ɒ/ is a bit like /ɑː/ in quality though they must be kept separate.
