Friedheim plays Liszt's 'Die Nachtwandlerin' ~ Fantasie on themes from 'La Sonnambula'

Here is another operatic fantasia by Liszt recorded on a piano roll by Hupfeld in the early 1900's by the legendary Arthur Friedheim. Before the advent of effective gramophone recording, piano rolls were the only way of recording longer piano works. Friedheim was Liszt's secretary as well as one of his most important pupils. He recorded for Hupfeld most of the important operatic fantasies as well as the B minor Sonata. From the surviving recordings, either from piano roll or phonograph it is clear that Friedheim was one of a handful of the most outstanding pianists of the late nineteenth century. It is evident that he had a solid technique which was truly 'transcendental', one only has to look at his extensive repertoire.
