Back in the day flashlights (Or torches as they were called) had pretty poor light output, unless you had something like a MagLite of course. I had an Ever Ready torch that ran two C batteries and it wasn't all that great but it was all I had and I thought it was great at the time. Today we have much better flashlights available and I have a little JetBeam Jet-U that runs a single AAA battery and it runs rings around this old style torch!
