Thank you for supporting Friday so I can continue to provide you with free content each week! Nyjah Huston is hands down the best competition street skater on the planet. Change my mind in the comments below but nobody has dominated skateboard contests like he has. That being said the final contest leading into the olympics he placed second and was bested by one trick by Yuto Horigome. Heading into the olympics I want to break down how I think this matchup is going to play out and why the an Olympic Gold Medal for Nyjah is going to be a tall order. First if you like these videos I make six a week so if you want to see all six of them subscribe like and turn the notifications on. You can follow me on instagram at the local Joe remember to make every day a Friday grab yourself a shirt and join the Friday movement the link is in the description along with links to everything that I skate. So I want to address what is in my mind the biggest obstacle for nyjah as he tries to get an olympic gold medal. Obviously Nyjah is extremely dominate and talented and incredibly hungry but the one issue I see is that Yuto Horigome may have more on the line than even Nyjah. As bad as I think Nyjah wants a gold medal I think Yuto might want it more because the olympics are being held in Tokyo which is Yuto Horigome’s home town. Not only does Yuto have a shot at becoming the first olympic gold medalist in skateboard but he could potentially do it in front of his friends and family not to mention is whole country and IN his own country. We’ve seen it before how laser focused yuto can be. He’s one of the only skaters that can compete with Nyjahs talent, consistency, and might be equally competitive. In the last few years we’ve seen yuto get the best of Nyjah Huston a few times in street league competition and even when Nyjah wins it seems that yuto is always nipping at his heels waiting for nyjah to just make one small mistake. So I definitely think Yuto is going to be more focused and hungrier than ever but that isn’t to say Nyjah Huston is going to just let Yuto win because his family will be there. Nyjah is a ruthless competitor which is weird to say because it’s skateboarding not basketball or something but Nyjah seems to feed off the pressure and the higher the stakes the more dialed he gets. If you follow nyjah Huston on Instagram you know he is putting in work at his private skatepark getting insane tricks on lock and even learning new tricks that we’ve never seen in competition. Nyjah is constantly pushing the level of difficulty of tricks done in contests which has led to much of his contest success however this is always a gamble and could be an area for Yuto to exploit. Trying contest NBDs is a game of risk and reward and one slip up trying to do a trick new trick that isn’t totally dialed and Nyjah could find himself standing next to Yuto on the podium with a silver medal around his neck. It’s crazy to be commentating on skateboarding like it’s a sport. Writing this script I felt like I was writing an article for sports center or something. Part of me loves that hype and the drama that goes into the storyline behind sporting events. And at the same time it’s seems wrong to be talking about skateboarding this way. It feels to comeditized or something. While at the same time I think of over events in the olympics like gymnastics or the high dive where judges pick scores for maneuvers it makes sense that skateboarding fits into this category of sports but at the same time what I love about skateboarding is you don’t see gymnasts skating down town trying to tumble on the sidewalk. But there is this pure side of skateboarding in the streets outside of all the contests that will always remain untouched. Something that you can’t put a price tag on it’s something that you have to experience yourself. Anyways I’m just rambling about my thoughts about skateboarding in the olympics at this point but I’m excited to see nyjah and yuto go head to head in Tokyo and I think it’s going to be an absolute battle for gold.
