WBBM Channel 2 - News Special Report: TV Magic - "The Mini Cam Van" (1978)

Here's a Special Report from Channel 2 News on WBBM Channel 2, with Health and Science Editor Roger Field reporting from the Minicam Van as part of his look at "TV Magic." The recording comes in just as Harry Porterfield finishes his intro of the piece. Roger starts off in a freezing rain storm atop the John Hancock Building, going on about how people passing by see WBBM's minicam vans on the street and being applied for use for reports, at which a person atop the van is seen raising an antenna dish to point to the Hancock building (although other stations would beam their signal to the Sears Tower), followed by a shot of a 3/4" Umatic tape being put into a Sony VO-2630 recorder. The speed of the transmission is given as 186,000 miles a second - the speed of light. Next is shown a microwave transceiver (or "mini-microwave unit"), looking in size almost like a Super 8 camera of the time, with Roger back atop Hancock explaining where he is, with said device next to him pointed towards the van on the street below, followed by a description of its function and how its transmission could be affected by certain factors. Who knows, maybe the infamous "Max Headroom" pirate saw this and got some ideas? ;-) The signal goes to the control room, which is positioned near the newsroom where Bill Kurtis and Harry co-anchor the news; an excerpt of a Mary Laney remote from the Civic Opera House is shown as is Bill's intro of her piece. Banks of monitors from the control room are shown, as is the activity therein. We then see part of the Hancock transmitter where Roger is near (while snow falls) as he concludes his presentation. Bill and Harry segue from this to the next segment, but then the recording jump-cuts to another Harry - Harry Volkman (whom Bill misidentifies as Mr. Porterfield), with the weather, illustrating how cold and damp it was besides Roger's report. This segment would appear to have been a forerunner to Mr. Field's subsequent 1981 special, Inside Out: The Magic of TV, presented here as follows: Part 1 -    • Inside Out - The Magic Of TV (Part 1, 1981)   Part 2 -    • [broken] Inside Out - The Magic Of TV (Par...   Part 3 -    • Inside Out - The Magic Of TV (Part 3, 1981)   "...Live television, coupled with microwave beaming techniques, extends the eyes and ears of those who watch it." This aired on local Chicago TV in 1978. About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television: The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels (or other cities occasionally); footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical preservation. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,700+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at: http://www.fuzzymemories.tv/index.php...
