I have never been close to Mount Baker. In fact, as much as I love the cascade mountains, I have only been up close to 2 of the 5 volcanoes. Oops. Anyways, this summer's goals were to explore the North Cascades and get up-close to the other 3 volcanoes not named Rainier of Saint Helens. Well, today Nash and I got so close to Baker we in fact started up the easiest summit route via the Easton Glacier. I wanted to know how long it would take to get to the climbing 'base-camp', how hard it would be to get there and if it would be necessary to camp there or day-hike the summit. It took us 2 hours and a bit of sweat to get there, but I think we could summit in a day if we get up early enough. Our second act was to go to up one of the more popular trails in the Baker vicinity: Park Butte and its fire lookout. Of course, it being a sunny weekend day, we weren't the only ones there. Oh well. The views were worth it. Our totals for the day were 9 miles of hiking and gaining a total of roughly 3,000 feet between the 2 trails.
