Otoplasty is basically surgery of the ears. Where you are correcting any deformity in the ears and it has a wide range of procedures that are encompassed. The main ones being or most commonly its being the lop ear or the bat ear correction. You must have seen in many kids you have a very prominent ear without the fold and it shows up and it is embarrassing for the kids and when they are going to school they get teased by their colleagues and by other students and which is a major case of embarrassment for them and that is where we do the otoplasty. It can be manifested in one ear, or it could be in both ears and it could be anywhere, its usually by birth and the corrections, these are some of the procedures we do, plastic surgery procedures we do even in kids. So because of the emotional aspect of it, because of the ridicule or the teasing that they get in the school which is why you need the correction. Otoplasty, there are various procedures. According to the deformity, it could be a shell ear, it could be a lop ear, or it could be a prominent ear. So there are various deformities to it and depending on that we have to carve the cartilage to give the folds and then we have to pin it back and fix it to the skull as well. So it is a very technical procedure and it is a very artistic procedure because we have to recreate what nature has not provided. And you have to recreate it according to the native anatomy of the ear which is already there. And it is done by basically, the cut is behind the ear from where we expose the cartilage, we tighten the cartilage, we shape it up and cover the ear back on. Its usually a day care procedure. You have to have a bandage on for about 2 weeks which will keep the ear in position and the complete healing takes about 3 months and depending on the specific deformity you have on the ear, the specific procedure has to be done and it is a very satisfying procedure.
