Meeting our Afghan counterparts was awkward and uncomfortable. We wanted to embrace them, respect them, love them, and be excited to fight alongside them. Unfortunately, it was damn near impossible to respect them because they not only sucked at just about every aspect of warfighting, but they didn’t seem to care about their country. Some of them would say they did, they’d talk shit about the Taliban, and say things like, “I hate Taliban, I kill all of them. "I will kill Taliban until the day I die.” Then that same guy would be high on post, sleeping on post, not paying attention on patrol, not come out from behind cover in a firefight, he’d sell his military gear to the local bazaar, he’d siphon his own gas and sell it in the bazaar, and definitely, would not waste his time training. So without respect, we couldn't love them, embrace them, nor be excited about working with them. Instead, the opposite occurred, and we resented them for their apathy. We resented them for all the reasons listed above. “We’re willing to DIE FIGHTING FOR YOUR COUNTRY!!! DO YOU FUCKING SEE THAT?” It was maddening to feel like we cared about their country more than they did. Sadly, it brought out the worst in us, and understandably so. When we’d hear reports of ANA and ANP getting smoked, some of us would laugh maniacally, because on some days, the thought of them dying was therapeutic. It made me think, “that’s what you get you piece a shit.” Some days we’d hear over the radio that an entire police unit abandoned their post, literally handing it to the Taliban. Other days we’d see an ANA or ANP unit abandon their patrol. It got depressing. Looking back on it, I feel terrible for feeling that way towards another group of people, let alone my allies. I wish the powers above me had a more accurate picture of the battlefield as we were fighting the war, maybe some things would've changed, maybe not.
