It’s been a whirlwind three days in global markets. It all started on Friday when Japan’s central bank unexpectedly raised interest rates. This decision hit 'carry traders' hard, as they’ve been borrowing Yen at near-zero rates to invest in US Treasury Notes and tech stocks. Now, $4 trillion in borrowings just got a lot more expensive. Adding to the turmoil, US unemployment numbers came in higher than expected, increasing the likelihood of US rate cuts. Warren Buffett sold over half of Berkshire Hathaway’s Apple holdings, signaling more trouble for tech stocks. Japan’s stock market dropped 6% on Friday and another 6% today, triggering market circuit breakers. South Korea also halted trading. Is this a flash correction or something bigger and more contagious? James Woodburn got Greg Canavan and Ryan Dinse on an impromptu call to discuss.
