Halifax W1048 is one of the most remarkable aircraft recovery stories of World War II. In this documentary, we follow how the RAF bomber made a wheels-up forced landing on frozen Lake Hoklingen in 1942, remained intact for hours, then slipped through weakened ice and settled upright in deep silt. Decades later, divers rediscovered Halifax W1048 almost complete on the lakebed, preserved by cold fresh water and oxygen-poor mud. This video breaks down the wreckage recovery challenge in detail: why the aluminum skin survived, why critical magnesium components became dangerously brittle, and how a portable lift system built from 54 oil drums created enough buoyancy to free the bomber without tearing it apart. We also examine the careful retrieval phase, the slow tow to shore, and the final haul-out that brought Halifax W1048 back into open air for the first time since 1942. From underwater survey work to controlled aircraft recovery engineering, Halifax W1048 shows how patience, load distribution, and preservation planning can save a historic airframe. The result is one of the most important RAF recovery projects ever completed and a rare surviving Halifax preserved largely as found.
