The members of the Noble Guards were taken from Roman noble families. The guardsmen were expected to hold titles dating back at least 100 years This regiment was to serve as a personal escort for the Pope, as well as for the major ecclesiastical offices of the Papal State when they were sent on behalf of the Pope. One of the most well-known missions performed by the guard was the escort of Pius VII to Paris for Napoléon Bonaparte's coronation. In 1808, the Noble Guard was temporarily dissolved when the French invaded the Papal State. It was then restored in 1815 by Pius VII after the French were defeated. The original armaments of the Noble Guard were carbines, pistols, and sabres. However, after the fall of the Papal State in 1870, they were only allowed to carry sabres (except during World War II, when Pius XII issued them with pistols). They were among the few units that were allowed to carry arms around the Pope. The commander of the corps was referred to as the Captain.
