(6 Oct 2018) About 200 animals rights activists marched through central Athens on Saturday, ending up at Syntagma Square in support of animal rights in Greece. The protesters held banners and placards with messages against the abuse of animals and many participants wore black t-shirts emblazoned with slogans such as "Anonymous for the voiceless" and "Fight speciesism." Ethos & Empathy, the activist group that organised the protest, said many crimes against animals go unreported in Greece, adding that the number of reported crimes against animals has risen 22 percent in the country over the past two years. Some animal welfare charities say the situation has been made worst by Greece's debt crisis, which caused a huge rise in the population of stray dogs. It said it organised the protest in connection with a Vegan life festival, to be held in Athens on Sunday. The march also comes a few days after World Animal day, an international day of action for animal rights.
