Symphonietta for 16 wind instruments (1943) - Jan Willem van Otterloo (1907-1978) 00:00 deel I: Molto sostenuto - Allegro 07:26 deel II: Tempo Vivo-Scherzando 09:47 deel III: Molto Andante 16:01 deel IV: Molto Allegro Van Otterloo, a Dutch conductor, cellist and composer, was born in Winterswijk, Gelderland, in the Netherlands. At first he was qualified to study medicine at Utrecht University but switched to studying cello and composition at the Amsterdam Conservatoire. While playing as a cellist in the Utrecht Stedelijk Orkest, he won a composition prize from the Concertgebouw Orchestra for his Suite No. 3, which he presented in his 1932 conducting debut, also with that orchestra. From 1949 to 1973 he was chief conductor of the Residentie Orkest in The Hague. At the same time from 1967 to 1970 he was chief conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (1967 -- 1971) and after that he was chief conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (1971-1978). Particularly prized for his performances of newer music, he made recordings, mostly for Philips Records, with Residentie Orkest, Concertgebouworkest, Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony, Orchestre Lamoureux and the Sydney Symphony. He died in East St Kilda , Melbourne in 1978 from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. This occurred not long after his farewell performance with the Sydney Symphony. His body was flown to The Hague for cremation. Yes, this is truly my surround recording from the very beginning. And yes, I was very nervous in doing so. But I got a lot of support from my recording assistant Louis Schreurs: very competent indeed! And, whauw what a beautiful orchestra playing outstanding for such a few audience, but nevertheless Louis and I enjoyed the performance so much.
