Days 135-136 With great excitement I loaded my bike onto the back of Amer’s car, and all my luggage into the back. I’d been told it was too risky to ride to the mountains on account of checkpoints and possible extortion. So a ride had been arrange with Amer and his wife. I was so excited! From Gharyan I would be free to ride around the Amaghzi region on the plateau. I planned a route including Qasr Al Hajj, traditional underground homes, and Berber villages. But on the approach it became clear Amer and I had different understandings of the plan for the day. In confusion I called called Bashir and Jaber, but yes it was confirmed I was here for a day trip. So why did I pack all my luggage into the car this morning?! I was so confused. I tried to hide my disappointment and enjoy our visit to an underground home. It was a beautiful place, cool from the heat of the day, and decorated traditionally. But I was dealing with a realisation of an awful possibility; were they ever going to deem a place safe enough for me to cycle? I’d hoped to ride through the mountains and that was out, I’d hope to cycle east too; would that be allowed? I began to wonder if I wouldn’t just have to turn back around to Tunisia. Back in the city the family were sitting down to an elaborate tea with a variety of fancy cakes. In the women’s part of the house the atmosphere was of noisy happiness with children running about, the younger ones often almost landing in the picnic spread on the floor. I would spend the night here; plans were being made to accommodate me at the beach from the following day. I think we’re waiting on paperwork to visit the mountains properly, but I really don’t know. My continued thanks to Mr Jaber of the Libyan Cycling Centre. He continues to oversee all aspects of my stay in Tripoli from accommodation, admin and formalities, to tourist visits. All the while with my safety as priority. I don’t always understand what is going on but I do know it is always with my best interests in mind. Thank you also to Dan who PayPalled me!
