US: What to Expect After the VNS Therapy™ Procedure

Understanding your treatment options is a critical step in your journey with epilepsy. Once your questions have been answered and you have chosen to move forward with the VNS Therapy™, your doctor's office will schedule the procedure. Here are a few things to expect after the procedure is complete. Your medical team will provide you with post implant instructions for your recovery. Your doctor will turn the device on and adjust the settings based on your personal seizure experience. It's important that you follow your doctor's treatment plan regarding medications. VNS Therapy™ is not a replacement for your medications, nor does it stop you from trying new ones or additional treatment. VNS Therapy™ may provide fewer seizures, shorter seizures, and better recover after seizures. Response to the treatment varies for each person. Some people notice a difference in a few months, and some require more time. The benefits of VNS Therapy™ may continue to improve over time. The latest VNS Therapy™ technology generally has a battery life of 2 to 10 years, depending on your settings. Once the battery is depleted, the generator will be replaced in a similar outpatient procedure. This procedure is also done under general anesthesia and is generally a shorter procedure than the original implant. Your health is important and we know these decisions aren't small ones. You are not alone. Contact LivaNova or talk to your neurologist to see if VNS Therapy™ is right for you. ---------- THIS VIDEO IS INTENDED FOR AUDIENCES IN THE UNITED STATES ONLY. The VNS Therapy System is indicated for use as an adjunctive therapy in reducing the frequency of seizures in patients 4 years of age and older with partial onset seizures that are refractory to seizure medications. The most common side effects with VNS Therapy are hoarseness, shortness of breath, sore throat and coughing. These side effects generally only occur during stimulation and usually decrease over time. The most common side effect of the surgical procedure is infection. For important safety information, visit www.vnstherapy.com/safety
