Around Sri Lanka Road Trip: Day 6 - From KKS to Delft Island on my XR250 Baja On Day 6 of our "Around Sri Lanka Road Trip," we begin at the Thal Sevana Army Resort in Kankesanthurai (KKS), visit the historic Sangamiththa Temple, experience our first ferry ride with the bike to Kayts Island, and end our day on the tranquil Delft Island. Riding my trusty XR250 Baja, we continue to explore the northernmost regions of Sri Lanka. Morning: Thal Sevana Army Resort to Sangamiththa Temple We start our day at the Thal Sevana Army Resort in KKS, enjoying a hearty breakfast and preparing for the day's adventure. Our first destination is the Sangamiththa Temple, a significant Buddhist site named after Sangamiththa Theri, the daughter of Emperor Ashoka, who brought the sacred Bodhi tree sapling to Sri Lanka. The temple, steeped in history and spirituality, offers a peaceful retreat with its serene atmosphere and beautifully maintained grounds. We take some time to explore the temple, meditate, and learn about its historical significance. Midday: Ferry to Kayts Island After the temple visit, we ride to the ferry point and prepare for a unique experience: taking our bike on a ferry to Kayts Island. The excitement of this new experience adds a fresh layer to our journey. Lunch in Kurikadduwan and Waiting for the Boat Upon arriving at Kayts Island, we ride to Kurikadduwan for lunch. This quaint town offers a variety of local eateries where we can sample traditional northern Sri Lankan cuisine. After a satisfying meal, we head to the Kurikadduwan Jetty to catch our boat to Delft Island. Unfortunately, the boat is 1.5 hours late, but this gives us time to relax, meet fellow travelers, and enjoy the coastal scenery. Afternoon: Boat Ride to Delft Island Eventually, the boat arrives, and we carefully load our bikes onboard. The boat ride to Delft Island is smooth, with calm waves and clear skies, providing a scenic and relaxing journey across the Palk Strait. The tranquil waters and gentle sea breeze make for an enjoyable crossing. Evening: Arrival in Delft Island and Resthouse Arriving at Delft Island, we disembark and ride to our resthouse. Delft Island, known for its unique landscapes, wild horses, and historical remnants, promises a unique experience.
