SANTA CRUZ DE LA PALMA, the capital city and cruise ship port of La Palma in the Canary Islands, is an AMAZING place steeped in history and adorned with beautiful architecture. We arrived on the TUI Marella Explorer cruise ship for a look around and a walking tour of this beautiful city. Come with me as we explore in this video! Founded in 1493 as Villa del Apurón by Alonso Fernández de Lugo, its strategic position quickly transformed it into a vital port on the transatlantic trade routes. By the 16th century, it stood as one of the Spanish Empire's most important maritime hubs, second only to Seville and Antwerp. This rich past has profoundly shaped the city, earning its historical center recognition as a Cultural Heritage site. Wandering through Santa Cruz de La Palma feels like stepping back in time. Cobbled streets wind past elegant colonial-style houses, their facades often graced with intricate carved wooden balconies that offer glimpses of the sea. The main thoroughfare, Calle Real, buzzes with local life, lined with shops and noteworthy buildings. The Plaza de España stands as a magnificent example of Renaissance architecture in the Canary Islands, serving as the city's heart and home to the impressive Town Hall and the Church of El Salvador. A leisurely stroll along the Avenida Marítima provides picturesque views of the ocean and the city's unique architectural character. Culturally, Santa Cruz de La Palma offers much to explore. The Naval Museum, housed within a replica of Columbus's Santa María, delves into the island's maritime history. The Insular Museum, situated in a former 16th-century monastery, showcases a diverse collection encompassing the island's history, art, and natural heritage. Historic churches like Iglesia del Salvador, Iglesia de Santo Domingo, and Iglesia de la Encarnación offer further insights into the city's past and artistic treasures. The city is also known for its vibrant festivals. Los Indianos, celebrated during Carnival on March 3rd in 2025, is a unique and playful event that recreates the return of islanders from Cuba, marked by participants dressed in white and a lively shower of talcum powder. The Bajada de la Virgen de las Nieves, a major festival held every five years (next in 2025), involves the procession of the island's patron saint and various cultural events, with key events anticipated around late June and early July, including the Virgin's procession on June 29th and the Dance of the Dwarves on July 2nd. The annual Carnival, with "The Jungle" as its theme in 2025 (February 26th to March 9th), fills the streets with parades and celebrations. Additionally, the Festival of the Crosses on May 2nd sees crosses throughout the city beautifully adorned. In essence, Santa Cruz de La Palma offers a compelling blend of historical significance, architectural charm, and lively cultural traditions, making it a truly distinctive and welcoming capital city within the Canary Islands.
