Deep Dive takes a deep look at the latest research from scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. In this episode, Scripps Director Margaret Leinen speaks with Assistant Professor Wenyuan Fan. Dr. Fan is an assistant professor of geophysics within the Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Physics at Scripps. He is an observational seismologist who uses seismic records collected both onshore and offshore to study the Earth and seismic sources. He is interested in earthquake rupture propagation, earthquake interaction and triggering processes, and the mechanisms of environmental seismic sources such as landslides and glacial quakes. This interview also covers the science of submarine landslides, stormquakes, and experiments underway that aim to improve earthquake prediction. 1:26 What is an observational seismologist? 3:10 What are submarine landslides? #Seismology #Earthquakes #DeepDive Featuring: Margaret Leinen, Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences at UC San Diego and Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography Wenyuan Fan, observational seismologist and Assistant Professor, Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Physics More information on Scripps Institution of Oceanography can be found here: https://scripps.ucsd.edu Subscribe to Scripps Oceanography on YouTube here: http://bit.ly/2PVlvmp Subscribe to Scripps' explorations now newsletter here: http://bit.ly/2ZAGhLx Follow Scripps Oceanography on social here: Facebook: / scrippsocean Twitter: / scripps_ocean Instagram: / scripps_ocean
