Cabot Highlands: A Modern Gem with Spectacular Views Cabot Highlands, formerly known as Castle Stuart, is a fantastic addition to the prestigious Cabot family of courses. Designed by Mark Parsinen and Gil Hanse and built in 2009, it offers a more modern golfing experience compared to the traditional Scottish links courses. It feels like an exceptional resort course rather than a classic Scottish gem, but its beauty and challenge make it a standout. The course runs along the stunning shoreline of the Moray Firth, providing breathtaking views from nearly every hole. The terrain is varied, with dramatic elevation changes and meticulously manicured fairways framed by rugged gorse, heather, and sea marram. The green complexes are thoughtfully designed, featuring natural bunkers and infinity-edge greens that demand precision in the short game. Cabot Highlands reminds me more of Cabot Cliffs, one of my all time favorite courses in Canada, than a traditional Scottish links. It’s a perfect addition to any Scottish golf trip—not only for its striking beauty but also for the variety it offers amidst an itinerary filled with more classic links layouts. A highlight of the course is the first three holes of both the front and back nine, which hug the beach before ascending to higher elevations and cliffside terrain that towers over the earlier holes. One of my favorite holes is the par-4 10th, with its dramatic drop from the elevated tee to a fairway along the shoreline. The course is designed to give you a sense of seclusion on most holes, allowing you to fully appreciate the surrounding landscape. The clubhouse is excellent, offering great views, delicious food, and a well-appointed locker room. As expected from a Cabot course, the service was top-notch. Note: The course has a full driving range and a short game area. Additionally, in 2026, the property will welcome Old Petty, a Tom Doak design that promises to be a valuable addition to the site.
