San Gimignano: This 4K walking tour video is filmed in Feb 2023. The temperature of that day is 11°C. Below you may find the story of this place. Hope you will enjoy the video! According to tradition, San Gimignano (SI) was founded by the two Roman brothers Muzio and Silvio who took refuge here after fleeing Rome because involved in the conspiracy hatched by Catilina. From a more strictly historical point of view, the first settlements in the area date back to prehistoric times. In the Etruscan era the first permanent residential areas were built on the top of the hill, while with the Roman colonization the center began to extend to the valley floor as well, mostly near the underlying watercourses. According to legend, the name “San Gimignano” derives from the name of the bishop of Modena who, miraculously appearing on the walls, saved the city from Totila's Goths. The construction of the original nucleus of the historic center dates back to the 10th century, while from about the year 1000 the city, thanks to its strategic position along the “Via Francigena”, underwent a notable socio-economic and urban development which led it to be one of the main stops for pilgrims and wayfarers. In 1199 San Gimignano became a free municipality and was governed first by consuls and then by a Podestà. Despite the bitter struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines that often undermined its social stability, the period of splendor for the city lasted until the mid-1300s, when the plague and submission to Florence marked the beginning of its decline. San Gimignano is famous in World for its towers, symbol, in the era Medieval, of the prestige and economic power of the various families. Today thirteen remain, but according to tradition they came to count as many as seventy-two. Hence the nickname "Manhattan of the Middle Ages". Countless historical and artistic beauties to visit, above all Piazza Duomo and the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the Palazzo del Podestà and the Rognosa Tower, the museum of torture, the Town Hall and the Art Gallery, Piazza della Cisterna, the Church of Sant'Agostino and the medieval sources. Since 1990 San Gimignano has been a UNESCO heritage site.
