From the 14th to the 21st of September 2024, artist Peter Liversidge was resident at the Royal College of Nursing Library and Museum in Marylebone, London. The location, 20 Cavendish Square, has a rich history, and has housed the HQ of the Royal College of Nursing since 1926, representing over half a million nurses, midwives, nursing support workers and students. During this residency, Peter ran a working artist's studio in our exhibition space. He was resident and painted over a the course of a week, keeping the same hours as the RCN Library and Museum, painting signs for visitors to take away with them. The text was inspired by both visitors to the studio and messaging from the RCN Archive, which included the ways in which nursing and caring professions have been represented in the media since the late 1890s. A selection of these signs were then installed on the railings surrounding the building, encouraging passers-by to reflect on the role of nursing in UK society. In this video, Peter reflects on the RCN Sign Painting Studio. He discusses the ways in which the open studio encourages collaboration, skill-sharing and develops lines of communication, distilling broad, conceptual ideas into striking messages and statements.
