Favorite Top 10 Scenes [Part 1] - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Spoiler Warning!! If you haven't played CoD 4 then what are you waiting for! If not the best FPS in the last decade then it's up there with the giants! Be nice to each other people and remember, this is just my favorite ten scenes A scene is a in-game cinematic part where the programmers have made delibirate and great set pieces that stand out from the gameplay, examples shown in this video. This style of "cutscenes" started with Half-Life back in 1998, where the player had control of the character, Gordon Freeman, at all times and could see the scene that was playing out in real time and from any angle he prefered. But if Valve is the pioneer then Infinity Ward is the master who perfected the formula. Well not really, they're both awesome :D What I love about the scenes in CoD 4 is that they're so sublime, you almost can't tell where the scene begins and where gameplay takes over. Other then being absolutely stunning visually, the gameplay and animations is solid and fluid, allowing for some amazing set pieces to take place. This system is used to immerse the player even more into the game and if done correctly the scenes can have tremendous impact on the player. Of course, no system is perfect. The upside with using this technique is that you can create a very personal and intimate experiance for the player by never taking away the interactivity that defines "video games". By always being in control you're given an experiance a scripted cutscene cannot give. It's oh so much more satisfying jumping off the boat yourself then watching a cutscene hog all the fun from you. The downside being that the developers have to put much more effort in steering the player and making sure he can't interupt the scripted actions or deviating from the path. Also, if the player is not paying attention he could miss the amazing set pieces because he was looking at a dustbin or whatever. Still an awesome and very powerful way to immerse the player into the game and creating a cinematic experiance. Interactivity is vital, the more control you take away the less impact it as.
