How can we use technology to improve cities? Business-as-usual, especially startup-style “move fast and break things” doesn’t work and government-as-usual doesn’t offer citizens radical new technologies. Cities need an altogether new approach towards civic innovation. Matthew Claudel, MIT urban scientist and designer, presents two new civic innovations: MITdesignX and Boston Beta Blocks, that allow us to critically and creatively engage with our civic futures. Matthew Claudel is a designer, researcher, and writer focused on the opportunities and challenges of civic innovation. He is working with the Boston Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics on Beta Blocks, a program for experimenting with civic technology. He is currently affiliated at the MIT Department of Urban Studies & Planning for his PhD, and is the Head of Civic Innovation at DesignX, a new program in the MIT School of Architecture and Planning. He studied architecture at Yale, where he received the Sudler Prize, the highest award for creative arts. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
