One thing is certain about Laphroaig single malt: no drinker is indifferent to it. Some are bewildered by its appeal, and others love its unapologetically full-on peaty, medicinal charms. If you discover that you belong to the latter category, this can quickly become a go-to dram of choice. Laphroaig Elements is a series of whiskies that delves into the artistry of production that makes Laphroaig’s whisky so richly flavoured and characterful. Experimentation in single malt is often reserved more for cask maturation, rather than distillation changes. However, the Elements series was brought about by investigating how the whisky character evolves when distillation methods are tweaked at the distillery on Islay. L1.0 was fermented for a lengthy 55 hours in two sizes of mash tun (one from the '90s and one from today) and with two types of wort, cloudy and semi-cloudy, before a maturation in bourbon casks. L2.0 was distilled during a particularly frosty January, and takes fermentation beyond Laphroaig's standard of 55 hours by experimenting with a range of longer fermentations, all the way up to 115 hours. The Islay dram is bottled at a cask strength of 59.6% abv, and boasts intense flavours of apple, honey, cream soda, smouldering bonfire and smoked seafood. L3.0 was born from an unexpected fire in the kiln, which caused it to burn for longer and at much higher temperatures than usual. The resulting whisky was distilled from the malt resting on the floor above.
