What the BIBLE ACTUALLY Says about PIERCINGS! 📖

In this video, I’m answering the question; What Does the Bible Say about Piercings? And by this, I mean any form of body modification in the form of piercing, like most commonly pierced ears, noses, etc. I will start by saying that The Bible never specifically addresses whether or not piercings are sinful. However, this hasn’t made piercings any less a topic of contention among Christians, and I certainly see the question being raised from time to time. It’s also worth noting that while the Israelites were forbidden from mutilating their bodies, piercings were a common practice both before and after the implementation of Levitical law. This leads me onto; What Exactly is Levitical law? I want to clarify something that always comes up when discussing piercing and the same applies to tattoos, and that’s Levitical Law. When someone quotes Levitical Law, they’re talking about the Book of Leviticus. Which is a great book, full of timeless wisdom. The Book of Leviticus is an Old Testament book laying out many of the laws that God effectively added later, and it’s in this book, more specifically chapter 19 verse 28 that people point to for God’s guidance on piercings. Leviticus 19:28 reads: “You shall not make gashes in your flesh for the dead, or incise any marks on yourselves.” This is what has led some Christians I know to renounce any type of piercing - yet I also know plenty of Christians who have piercings and believe it’s simply an act of self-expression and they’re not “marking their bodies.” Ultimately it comes down to personal interpretation of scripture and concepts, and like I said, importantly, nowhere in the bible does it say it’s a sin to get a piercing. Should I get a Piercing? Let’s be honest, piercings are incredibly common in Western culture (and other parts of the world), and have been for a long time. If you want to pierce your ears, or some other part of your body, the important question you should be asking yourself is, “What are my motivations for getting a piercing?” If you’re trying to keep up with your friends, or even feel pressured to get a piercing to fit in, then that’s the wrong reason. The only person you should be following is the Lord almighty. A verse that comes to mind is 1 Corinthians 10:23, which reads: “‘I have the right to do anything,’ you say —but not everything is beneficial. ‘I have the right to do anything’— but not everything is constructive.” What this means is that just because piercings aren’t a sin, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are always good - it comes down to the why behind your choice. I’ll end on another powerful verse that’ll leave you with food for thought, and that’s 1 Corinthians 10:31, which reads: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” This is one of my favorite bible verses. The lesson here is a powerful, yet simple one; we all have the ability to glorify God with our actions and words, and everything we choose to do.
