(23 Oct 2000) The bouffant-haired queens of lipgloss, CHARLIE''S ANGELS, dazzled the crowd when they showed up for the starry Hollywood premiere of the long-awaited, much hyped comedy. DREW BARRYMORE (who also co-produced the movie), CAMERON DIAZ and LUCY LIU make up the feisty threesome - with looks to kill and brains to boot. The film is a movie version of the hit 70s show about three beautiful private investigators who save the world armed only with their long hair and a few high kicks. The Angels beat the boys hands down, with their use of martial arts and unusual ability to jump off buildings. ''Friends'' star MATT LEBLANC, BILL MURRAY (who plays Bosley) and TIM CURRY joined the girls for the screening of what promises to be a light-hearted kitsch comedy packed with action. And the remake also attracted original Angel JACQUELINE SMITH, as well as KELLY PRESTON (Mrs John Travolta), CHRISTIAN SLATER and COURTNEY LOVE to Mann''s Chinese Theater. The hype surrounding the film has been intense, and the red carpet was teaming with Angels old, new and even a few lookalikes. Nearly every Hollywood actress auditioned to be an Angel, including Angelina Jolie and Liv Tyler. Even British Spice Girl Victoria Adams and former Spice Geri Halliwell tried to get in on the action. Thandie Newton had been slated to star in the movie, but had to pull out when the filming schedule clashed with ''Mission: Impossible 2''. But the film was reported to be dogged by problems from casting to fights between co-stars about screen time and sexy costumes. Lucy Liu - from TV''s ''Ally McBeal'' - was rumoured to have tangled with Bill Murray during filming, though she has since put the dispute down to creative differences - and says their disagreement never became physical. "The rumours started going crazy that I swung at him. This guy is like 6-foot-2 (188 centimetres). I wasn''t going to pull out kung fu on him," Liu says. And she and Murray were on good terms after making the film, apparently. "When I saw the movie, I called him up and left him a message and told him how wonderful he was," 31-year-old Liu said. The girls had to learn martial arts for the movie, and admit it was one of the hardest things they''ve ever had to do. The trio of beauties underwent six- to eight-hour workouts with a Chinese martial arts expert. Diaz says "I couldn''t touch my toes when I started. The trainer would push me down on my back saying ''Pain is your best friend, get to know him. Just say the words, I love pain.'' I cried but by the end of my first day, my forehead was on my knees." Drew Barrymore is more of a masochist. "I love the tough, survivalist aspect of what the boys get to do. I felt tough and strong - it was thrilling." The Angels'' mission is to save the soon-to-be millionaire, Eric Knox (Sam Rockwell), from his mysterious kidnappers. Sexy, smart, feminine and deadly, the Angels are the only ones who could possibly save the head of Knox Technologies and the lives of thousands of innocent Americans before it''s too late... ''Charlie''s Angels'' is directed by McG (full name Joseph McGinty Mitchell), making his feature film debut. He has previously directed music videos for the Barenaked Ladies, Sugar Ray and the Offspring. ''Charlie''s Angels'' is released in the US on 3 November, and the rest of the world throughout November and December.
