As Beauty's owners are novice drivers, we have put Kate (another novice client who is also having her horse broken at the same time) on the reins to show that she can drive Beauty without him getting upset or misbehaving. This is only her 4th ever time on the reins of a driving horse and her first ever time driving Beauty. We show that she can drive him at the walk, trot and canter, do an emergency stop, turn around in a narrow road and cope happily with traffic coming towards us and overtaking us. We have taken her straight out on the roads as well, to put her in a situation where most people would be nervous (i.e. driving a newly-trained, unfamiliar horse out on unfamiliar roads) rather than letting her get used to him in an enclosed area i.e. field or arena. This is a big test for both the novice driver and for Beauty, fresh out of the stable with a different driver on the reins, which should give his owners confidence when they come to drive him.
