Vidkun Quisling, a Norwegian politician and former military officer, is infamous for his collaboration with Nazi Germany during World War II. He led the Nasjonal Samling (National Unity) party, a fascist movement founded in 1933. The party initially struggled for support but gained prominence when Quisling orchestrated a coup on April 9, 1940, coinciding with Germany's invasion of Norway. He declared himself Prime Minister, though the Germans soon replaced him with a civilian administration under their control. Despite his limited authority, Quisling's regime collaborated with the Nazi occupiers, assisting in enforcing German policies, including the persecution of Jews and political dissidents. The Nasjonal Samling acted as a vehicle for Nazi ideology, promoting anti-Semitism, authoritarianism, and nationalism. Quisling’s name became synonymous with treason. After the war, he was arrested, tried for war crimes, and executed in 1945. His collaboration left a lasting stain on Norway’s wartime history.
