Rabitah: Poetry in the Park- The Early Arabs of New York

The Washington Street Historical Society, in partnership with NYC, will soon honor the earliest Arabic speaking community in the United States with a permanent public art memorial in NYC. Out of that first migration from Lebanon and Syria in the early 20th century, emerged a group of poets and writers known as "The Pen Bond", whose members included Kahlil Gibran, Ameen Rihani, Iliya Abu Madi, and Mikhail Naimeh, as well as many others, who inspired an extraordinary intellectual movement, producing literature that continues to be read by generations of people in the Arab world,and beyond. They will soon be permanently honored steps away from where they first lived in their new homeland, on Washington Street, on New York's lower west side.
