The Shape of Water Suite | The Shape of Water (Original Soundtrack) by Alexandre Desplat

The Shape of Water is a beautiful movie, and it's absurd premise allows it to embrace its weirdness and become a beautiful, passionate ode to love and what it means to love. Desplat's Oscar winning score is perfectly fitting of the film, with two distinct themes that are so structurally similar and thematically connected I included them both in the suite. The first is Elisa's theme, with a group of woodwinds performing a background melody that the main motif builds off of. Her theme is tender, childlike, and wistful, played on piano, strings, or Desplat himself whistling the theme. As her love with the Asset deepens, a theme for the two of them takes shape, which has all of the elements of Elisa's theme but with a new motif that is meant to reflect their romance and love. The score is a beautiful reflection of the film itself, and it deserved the Oscar for Best Original Soundtrack of that year.
