Wilhelm Backhaus (1884-1969) was one of the great 20th century pianists, albeit now lesser known than many of his contemporaries. Born in Germany, in a year when Liszt was still alive, he lived long enough to produce stereo recordings such as this one that he made at the age of 80. His performance of this lesser known piece of Schumann is a good example of the intimate style of playing Backhaus was best known for. One can imagine Backhaus playing this in small venue or home and it sounding much like this performance. As a side note - those looking to collect classical LPs, will find great bargains with the London Treasury Series. These were reissues done in the 1970s and onwards of some of the great London "Blue-back" LPs of the 50s and 60s. To me, the Treasury series are on-par or better sounding than the originals, and have the advantage of being a decade or two newer. That means less noisy vinyl. With their rather boring covers - these are often overlooked in record bins, and they can often be purchased at very low prices (particularly compared to the original London issues.)
