The benefits of fenced reserves for species conservation have been clearly demonstrated and indicate that removing introduced predators can lead to successful reintroduction of threatened species and protection of critical insurance populations. However, reserve management is expensive, and expanding the benefits of fenced reserves from short term holding paddocks for individual species to thriving, functioning ecosystems is difficult. Here we explore the issues of reserve management (fence costs, maintenance and longevity, and feral incursions and eradication) and difficulties in recreating functioning ecosystems (overpopulation, drought and halo expansion beyond the fence).
