Gorr was a person who believed in his god, when his planet and its people were dying he and his daughter left to find food and water and continued to worship their god. When his daughter died Gorr was attracted by the Necrosword there he met his god, when he discovered that his god was an arrogant and cruel god Gorr stopped worshiping him and the Necrosword chose him. He became the Butcher of the Gods since then he has been killing the gods he was in but to kill them all he had to reach Eternity and for that he needed Thor and the bifrost.
