Join The CatholicTV Network for the full Daily Catholic Mass celebration on this Friday of the Fourth Week of Ordinary Time, as we honor the Memorial of Saint Paul Miki and Companions. In today’s stirring Homily, Father Richard Clancy reflects on the "wondrous way of life" of the Japanese martyrs who, even in the face of death, "always loved God above all things". He draws a powerful parallel between their courage and the "constancy" of St. John the Baptist, whose fidelity to the truth cost him his life. We are invited to pray that, through their intercession, we may "see what must be done" and find the spiritual strength to remain faithful to the Gospel message, even in the midst of worldly trials. The Scriptures highlight the consequences of division and the ultimate cost of discipleship: -The First Reading (1 Kings 11:29-32; 12:19): The prophet Ahijah meets Jeroboam and tears his new cloak into twelve pieces, signifying the division of Israel due to Solomon’s infidelity. Jeroboam is given ten tribes, illustrating that the Lord is the ultimate "ruler of all" and that the house of David has been humbled. -The Responsorial Psalm (Ps 81): A call to listen to the Divine voice: "I am the Lord, your God: hear my voice". -The Holy Gospel (Mark 6:14-29): King Herod hears of Jesus' fame and fears that John the Baptist has been raised from the dead. The narrative recounts the tragic death of the Baptist, beheaded at the request of Herodias’ daughter, a poignant reminder that the "victory of Jesus over death" is often preceded by the sacrifice of His faithful witnesses. Let us pray that these Sacred mysteries may restore us to holiness and grant us the pardon and strength we seek.
