Simon Franglen interview on Avatar: Fire and Ash - Grief themes, sound design & collaboration Simon Franglen’s first musical idea for Avatar: Fire and Ash arrived in 2018 as a memorial song written for Zoe Saldaña’s character to sing in grief. Franglen explains how he followed that early piece with a dance theme for the Wind Traders, while most of the score was completed over the past two and a half years. He discusses the scale of the project, including more than three hours of music and nearly 2,000 pages of score. Franglen describes the most time-consuming writing as an hour-long action sequence, and the most difficult cue as “The Miracle”, which was repeatedly reworked as the edit changed. He reflects on his collaboration with James Cameron and considers the balance between when music should drive a scene and when silence might serve it better. Franglen details the technical challenges of designing and 3D-printing instruments for on-set performance, and explains how the Mongolian morin khuur helped shape the distinctive sound of the Ash. He outlines his approach to avoiding repetition by composing specifically to picture, and discusses how restraint and “austerity” underpin the family’s grief themes. Franglen argues that the score’s purpose is emotional rather than architectural, and hopes listeners will one day hear the film’s story return through the music.
