007 Goldeneye Reloaded Review by Gamers Armada

Goldeneye's back, and in it's third revision. This time Bond is back in all the HD glory you can wave your Walther PP7 at on the PS3, and Xbox 360. The first thing everyone wants to know is how does Goldeneye Reloaded stack up against the original N64 version everyone's so fond of. Well... that's kind of like asking which is better a pure bred Mustang, or a Ford Mustang. Although they share the same name, that's where the similarities stop. Goldeneye Reloaded is "based" off the same story line as the movie and N64 game, but re-envisions the entire experience. The places are the same or similar, the characters are the same or similar, but what happens in the game, and how Bond reacts are completely different most of the time. Think of it as a parallel 007 universe. I found this to be a good change. I've watched the movie a million times already, and played the N64 version to death when I was younger. Goldeneye Reloaded presents a new experience in a familiar atmosphere. What's not so good about this experience is found in the simplistic gameplay of Goldeneye's campaign. Each level is basically the same, you kill the bad guys, and then escape. At first this was really fun, and reminded me of games from 15 years ago where story, plot, mini-games, where meaningless, and just blasting enemy after enemy was all you needed for fun. It still is but, after a few hours though this becomes stale, especially in light of the high quality titles launching this holiday season. Goldeneye Reloaded's campaign just doesn't stack up. But, who cares about single-player, everyone remembers Goldeneye for it's Multiplayer! Since the game plays just like a modern COD game, so does the multiplayer. In fact the best way to describe the multiplayer is a watered down COD clone. I call it watered down because you can't go prone, the levels are designed for run an gun or sniping only, and it takes forever to be able to create your own custom class. Ok, so it only takes until level 8, but that's a couple hours at least. Just like any modern COD game you can choose which loadouts you want, equip attachments, etc. The most disappointing thing about the multiplayer is Activision decided NOT to recreate the classic maps everyone loved from the N64 version. The #1 complaint I heard over the headset was where's the Temple level? I agree with that sentiment. Overall, 007 Goldeneye Reloaded isn't a horrible game. In fact the single player is a lot of fun in small doses, and the multiplayer is ok, but not great. The graphics in Goldeneye are pretty good, especially the environments, and the cut scenes require player interactions to keep you involved in the game. In the end I'm left feeling like they almost got it right, but the game needed to be tweaked more, and a bit of variety to the campaign to make this a completely enjoyable experience. I'd recommend renting this game if you're in the mood for a kill 'em all shooter or wait until it hits the bargain bin.
