Electrostatics - J.J Thomson's Experiment | Class 12th Physics - Electron की खोज | NEET & JEE | The history of electric charge can be traced back to ancient Greece, when people first observed that rubbing certain materials together caused them to attract or repel each other. Ancient Greece The ancient Greek philosopher Thales of Miletus (c. 624–546 BC) is often credited with first describing the phenomenon of electric charge. The Greeks observed that rubbing amber with fur caused it to attract light objects, like hair. They also observed that rubbing amber for long enough could produce an electric spark. 17th century William Gilbert, an English scientist, coined the New Latin word electricus from the Greek word electron, meaning "amber". Otto von Guericke invented what is thought to be the first electrostatic generator. 18th century Benjamin Franklin conducted experiments with electric charges and named the two types of electricity "positive" and "negative". Franklin also coined many electrical terms that are still used today, such as "battery", "charge", "conductor", "plus", "minus", and "capacitor". 19th century J.J. Thompson, a British physicist, discovered the electron through experiments using cathode ray tubes. #electrostatics #Historyofelectriccharge #physics
